Chapter Six
Saturday, 15th October 2022
On Saturday morning, Georgie was back in Wimborne. She hurried along the pavement with her hood up as the rain fell steadily. She was on her way to the chemistâs to pick up a prescription for her grandfather when the rain suddenly came down like stair rods, as he would say. She took shelter in the doorway of a suit hire shop. If the store had been of more interest to her, sheâd have gone inside to browse while waiting for the shower to pass, but she had zero interest in menâs suits. She spotted Mitchâs wife Deanna splashing along the pavement, holding a flimsy tartan umbrella. She was tiny in both height and build. A pair of sparkly hoop earrings and crimson lipstick were the only distractions from her all-black outfit. Georgie managed to catch her eye and waved at her. It took a second for Deanna to recognise her before she waved back. They both grimaced at the rainfall. Drops were now bouncing off the pavement.
âUgh, this is awful! I was on my way to Coffee & Cream for a hot chocolate or something. Fancy joining me?â Deanna asked.
Georgie looked in the direction of the local tearoom in a Georgian building close to the medieval Minster church from which the town got its name.
âSounds like a good idea.â They charged towards the other side of the square, Georgie in her sensible hiking boots and Deanna in a pair of kitten-heeled boots which Georgie would struggle to run in at the best of times.
Inside the tearoom, a waitress greeted them with a printed menu and directed them to the only empty table. Not surprisingly, other people had had the same idea and the café was full. Both women removed their dripping coats â Georgie her mustard yellow parka and Deanna an expensive-looking black puffer jacket â and draped them over the back of the bistro-style chairs. Deanna was in a fluffy jumper and a string of gold necklaces, her long dark hair scraped into a high ponytail. They perused the menu, but Deanna quickly announced that she knew what she was having: a hot chocolate with âthe worksâ and a slice of rocky road. Georgie had been feeling slightly overwhelmed by the choices available and plumped for the same. Given that Deanna was so petite, Georgie was impressed that she had ordered something so sugary. She wouldnât have been surprised to find that she subsided on little more than lettuce leaves.
As the tearoom was busy, they were warned they may have to wait for their order, but that wasnât a problem. It was simply a relief to be somewhere warm and dry. The window had steamed up, obscuring the view of the square. On the table was a notice about Christmas, which Deanna picked up and abruptly put down again.
âI donât even want to think about Christmas in mid-October.â
âWere you doing some shopping today?â
âI was getting my nails done.â Deanna flexed her slender fingers to reveal bright pink nails and her sparkling rings, which Georgie politely admired.
